A 17th-century village 'beyond the Red forest' in the heart of the Black Earth region: the restored Vladimir church of 1840, the Park of Glory and endless fields between Yelets and Dankov.
Krasnoye Village
Krasnoye arose in the mid-17th century; the first records date to 1678, when 'the village of Krasnaya beyond the Red forest' counted 23 households. It became a selo in 1705; the locals are called 'krasnintsy'. Today it is the centre of the Krasninsky district between Yelets and Lebedyan. The village's main vertical is the Vladimir church: a stone temple built in 1840 at the expense of the landowner V. K. Naumov, ruined in Soviet years and now restored. There is also the Lenin square with its monument and the Park of Glory with the sculpture of the Sorrowing Mother. Krasnoye is a typical point of the 'quiet' Black Earth region: the Lutoshkino station on the Yelets–Lebedyan line, a bus station, fields to the horizon. Come for the feeling of the Russian countryside without tourist trappings — and as a waypoint on a route through the upper Don.
How to get there
About 40 km from Yelets on the Krasnoye road; the Lutoshkino station lies on the Yelets–Lebedyan line; there is a bus station in the village.
Best season
May to September: dry fields and roads, the church open in daytime.
