Kreuzburg Castle

In Slavskoye village, on a hill, traces remain of Kreuzburg Castle — a little-visited site in the western oblast. From the medieval fort survive the hill and masonry fragments; the forecourt is occupied by a cemetery, giving an unusual context for a visit. This is for travellers who have seen the "main" castles and want an offbeat stop without crowds. Ruins read from a distance, but the scale is modest — plan a short stop, not a half-day. Easiest by car from Kaliningrad or Slavsk. May to September is best, when access roads are dry and days are long. The town of Slavsk is nearby — a different historical context that fits the same trip through the western oblast.
