Kucherla Lake

Kucherla is one of the best-known high lakes in southern Altai; turquoise water, cedar-larch taiga, and steep slopes around the shore. Access is only by hiking or horse routes over passes and Катунь tributary valleys. The lake lies within Катуньsky Reserve influence; visit rules are stricter than tract-side roads. Travellers typically leave from Katanda or Barangol for several days with tents, supplies, and local guides if needed. Fords and trail-less sections appear en route — water rises fast after rain. Kucherla is valued for quiet, permitted fishing, and views of snowy peaks across the valley. Not a beach or roadside postcard — no infrastructure at the water, camping only in tents or agreed sites. Here taiga scale is felt in a way no viewpoint can convey. Routes often link Kucherla with neighbouring Kucherlinskoye Lake — an expedition format of a week or more with food reserves and mountain weather readiness.
