Kuka Volcanic Plateau

The Kuka area has frozen lava fields, extinct cones and black rocky patches in steppe — rare surface steppe volcanism for Trans-Baikal, not just textbook geology. Yellow grass, dark slag and rounded hills contrast sharply. Easy to lose bearings on dirt roads without a local guide — the plateau looks uniform until you reach a cone. Unpaved access from Kuka village and Krasny Chikoy; rain makes driving hard. Geologists and photographers visit; camp outside private plots. Summer heat without shade — water, hat and dawn starts. Sturdy boots mandatory — lava is sharp and slick after dew. Combine with Tarbagatai Range and Krasny Chikoy — the west's geological loop for rare landforms, not services.
