The museum complex on the field of the Battle of Kulikovo: Shchusev's church on Red Hill, Bryullov's 1850 column and the new 2,500-square-metre battle museum in Mokhovoye.
Kulikovo Field Museum Reserve
The State Museum Reserve 'Kulikovo Pole' was founded in October 1996 and unites the sites of the 1380 Battle of Kulikovo. On Red Hill stand the church of Sergius of Radonezh (begun in 1913, completed in 1917, by architect Alexey Shchusev; since 2010 a metochion of the Trinity Lavra) and the column to Dmitry Donskoy, opened in 1850 to Alexander Bryullov's design. The Museum of the Battle of Kulikovo — a new building on the site of the former village of Mokhovoye — opened in 2016 (architect Sergey Gnedovsky); the exposition 'The Tale of the Mamai Slaughter. A New Reading' spreads over 2,500 square metres. In the village of Monastyrshchino are the 1884 Nativity church, the Alley of Memory and Unity, the Grave of the Unknown Soldier and a chapel at the confluence of the Don and the Nepryadva. In Epifan, the Museum of Merchant Life works in the Baibakov estate; in Tula, the branch 'Tula Antiquities'. The reserve's funds hold over 50,000 items, more than 40,000 of them archaeology. Taken here as the museum-and-church fabric of the place, with the field's postcard views left out of frame.
