Lake Peipus Shore

Lake Peipus runs along the oblast's western border. Mostly low sandy and grassy shores; shallow water warms in summer. Rich in fish — zander, bream, smelt and others. Shore settlements — Gdov, Samolva, fishing villages — working places with landings and nets, not resorts. Locals swim at equipped spots in summer; fewer tourists than lakes near Pskov. South-shore views over open water and the far bank. Striking sunsets; frequent onshore wind — an open body with waves, not a sheltered lagoon. Best by car along the shore with stops at Gdov, villages and beaches. Winter ice fishing and sometimes cars on ice — dangerous without local knowledge. Peipus is the oblast's natural and historical layer — battles and trade routes. Today for quiet water time, not Kremlin bus tours.
