A saline lake with a west-shore spa zone — a destination in its own right, not an Abakan city walk.
Lake Shira
Lake Shira sits near 440 m in a basin; mineralized water known since the 19th century; sanatoriums and beaches on the west shore. Steppe and rocky shores; water warms in summer but stays saline; views from road and hills. Shira village and museum nearby; Sunduki mountains east. Busy in summer; seasonal winter hours. Without a voucher, shore walks and day trips from Abakan or Sayanogorsk work well. A republic symbol with variable water level and windy steppe climate.
How to get there
~140 km from Abakan or ~60 km from Sayanogorsk; buses from both.
Best season
June–August for bathing; May and September for walks
