Lipetsk Resort

The Lipetsk resort in the Nizhny park on the bank of the Voronezh is the country's second 'Lipetsk mineral waters' after the Marcial Waters. In 1722, during the Persian campaign, Peter the Great personally tried the water from the spring at the Lipetsk ironworks, and Alexander I's decree founding the 'Lipetsk Mineral Waters' resort was signed in 1805. The first capital buildings — the mineral baths — were erected from May 1805 to a design by Andrey Voronikhin, the architect of the Kazan Cathedral; the building survives. In 1806 the English park (today's Nizhny) appeared to the gardener Jaaks' plan, followed by a pump room and a hospital. Today the resort is a specially protected natural territory treating the musculoskeletal system, heart, nervous system and metabolism: mineral and pearl baths, Charcot showers, local therapeutic peat mud. In 2005 the resort marked its bicentenary.

How to get there

About 450 km from Moscow to Lipetsk; the resort is in the Nizhny park on a bend of the Voronezh, within walking distance of the centre.

Best season

Year-round; drinking and bath courses require a sanatorium package.
