A remnant hill above the Kama mouth — a landscape reserve since 1991: landslide bluffs, rare plants, mammoth skeletons found in the ravine and the finest panorama of two great rivers merging.

Lobach Hill

Lobach is a remnant hill 136 metres high on the right bank of the Volga opposite the Kama mouth; the reserve declared in 1991 covers 241 hectares. On the steep bluffs upper Permian dolomites and limestones are exposed, and more than two of the three kilometres of shoreline are landslide sections: the bank here lives and moves. The hill is a storehouse of surprises: in 1937 two complete mammoth skeletons were found in a ravine, thirteen archaeological sites from the Palaeolithic to the first millennium AD are known on the slopes, and in 1870 Ilya Repin sketched here for his 'Barge Haulers on the Volga'. In the autumn of 1918 battles of the Civil War raged nearby — a system of trenches long survived on the summit. Rare species grow on the slopes — purple scorzonera, limestone chervil, slender St John's wort; Lobach even appears on the flag of the Kamsko-Ustyinsky district. From the summit opens the main reward: a vast panorama of the Volga and Kama merging — the place where two rivers become one.

How to get there

South-eastern edge of Kamskoye Ustye: from the settlement on foot or by car along forest roads to the reserve's trails up to the summit.

Best season

May to October; the panoramas are best in clear weather, early in the morning or at sunset.

Travel tips & stories

  • It is a reserve: keep to the worn trails and do not pick flowers — the slope's rare species are protected.

  • The bluffs are landslide-prone: approach the edge only where a trail is visible and the ground is firm.

  • Combine it with the Yuryevskaya cave and the spring at Kamskoye Ustye — one day covers the whole right-bank country.
