Chalk Hills (Maloarkhangelsk)

Southern Oryol Oblast has chalk deposits; near Maloarkhangelsk white outcrops, gullies and steppe slopes appear. Related to Kursk and Belgorod chalk hills but less touristy. Chalk was used for building and lime; quarries partly abandoned, partly active — do not enter private land. Open outcrops visible from roads. Steppe flora: feather-grass, fescue, rare slope species. Spring flowering; summer heat on white chalk — sun protection essential. Combine with Orlovskoye Pole memorial in the same district — history and geology in one day. Chalk edges crumble — stay back. Avoid active quarries with machinery. Good tread on shoes — slopes slippery after rain.

How to get there
