Northwest Sakhalin Small Lakes Wetland
On northwest Sakhalin from Viakhtu Bay to the Langry valley — lowland with round and oval lakes, lagoon bays and peat bogs. The 'Bays and Lakes of Northwest Sakhalin' wetland exceeds 200,000 ha and is listed under Ramsar criteria. Migratory waterfowl including rare species nest and rest here. Small plain lakes silt up into bogs; many northwest ponds are final-stage former lagoons cut off by sand spits. For birders and quiet taiga — not city tourism; partly dirt roads, patchy signal.
How to get there
By car from Okha or Alexandrovsk-Sakhalin toward Tyk and Viakhtu bays and inland lakes.
