A 1777 Azov–Mozdok line fort — foundation of Mariinskaya stanitsa on the Малка’s left bank in Kirovsky District.
Mariinskaya Fortress
The Fortress of the Holy Virgin Mary was founded in 1777 on the Azov–Mozdok defensive line along the Zolka River. Mariinskaya stanitsa grew around it, also called Belomechetskaya. Early decades brought repeated attacks; military value faded from the 1820s. In 1825 relocation to redoubts on the Малка was proposed; by 1828 the garrison stood where Mariinskaya lies today. The fort was abolished in the late 19th century; civilians joined the garrison. Modern Mariinskaya is a Kirovsky district stanitsa on the Малка, 15 km from Novopavlovsk. Interest lies in the steppe defence line and Cossack stanitsa history, not a museum rebuild. Original Zolka fort remains survive near Fazanny settlement.
