Spaso-Preobrazhensky Monastery (Mtsensk)

Spaso-Preobrazhensky Monastery stands in Mtsensk on a steep right bank of the Oka. Founded in the 12th century; rebuilt in the 16th–17th centuries; a seminary where Ivan Turgenev studied operated here in the 19th century. The Transfiguration cathedral, gate church, residential and service buildings and wall fragments survive. The ensemble reads well from the embankment and Oka bridge. An active monastery with ongoing restoration — not museum décor. Respect silence and modest dress. Mtsensk links to Turgenev through this school as well as Spasskoye estate. A walk from the monastery to the embankment shows old Mtsensk. Mtsensk is a base for Spasskoye-Lutovinovo and the Oka valley; include the monastery at the start or end of the day.
