Mezen

Mezen stands on the right bank of its namesake river, over a hundred kilometres from Arkhangelsk by northern roads. The town grew from a trading and fishing settlement — boats left for the estuary, fishing grounds and villages now known for dunes and tundra barrens. The centre keeps early 20th-century wood and stone houses, landings and a slope to the river. Not a resort: fish plant, school, clinic and shops — life follows fishing seasons, navigation and a brief summer tourist window. The drive from Arkhangelsk takes many hours; sections are unpaved and weather-dependent. Winter links rely on ice roads and flights; summer adds river transport to the estuary and neighbouring settlements. Mezen works as a base before Shoyna, river mouths and White Sea coast between Mezen and Pechora. Fuel, food and lodging are more reliable here than in smaller route stops. Interesting for Pomor history in a working northern river setting, not only museum displays. Allow a day for the embankment walk and local advice on road conditions further north.
