One of Trans-Baikal's largest volcanoes with an intact crater — landmark above steppe near Amur Oblast.
Mogoituysky Volcano
Mogoituysky Volcano rises hundreds of metres above steppe. The crater is partly intact; grassy slopes with rocky outcrops — an iconic volcanic silhouette of eastern Trans-Baikal. Hike from the foot; the final section is steep and rocky. Clear-day summit views over steppe and distant ranges for tens of kilometres. Sparse population; nearest settlement is Mogoytuy. Non-technical climb but needs treaded boots, water and an early start — afternoon heat and storms. Do not enter the crater without experience — slope slips are possible. Snakes among rocks — watch your step. Natural fit on a Borzya–Mogoytuy route — the east's main nature goal for panoramas, not amenities.
How to get there
From Chita via Borzya and Mogoytuy on mixed paved and dirt roads to the foot.
Best season
June–September without rain
