Region: Sakhalin OblastCoordinates: 46°15′N 141°14′E

Moneron Island

Moneron lies in Tatar Strait ~70 km from Nevelsk off Cape Crillon's west coast. Area ~30 km², highest point 429 m. Since 2007 a state marine nature park — rivers, waterfalls, rock arches and among Sakhalin's clearest water. No permanent residents; Soviet fish factory and villages were abandoned. Boat or helicopter from Nevelsk with border and park permits. A 1–2 day expedition with strict conservation rules, not a city beach.

How to get there

Boat or helicopter from Nevelsk via tour operators; border passes required.

Best season

July–August in calm weather

Travel tips & stories

  • Landing forbidden without a border pass.

  • Nevelsk Strait seas are fickle — multi-day delays happen.

  • Pack out all waste — limited infrastructure.

  • Keep distance from seal haul-outs and bird nests.

  • Wetsuit useful even in summer — water is cool.
