Mongun-Taiga Peak
Mongun-Taiga (Tuv. “Silver Mountain”) is a 3,976 m summit in south-western Tuva’s Altai system — the highest point of the republic and Eastern Siberia. Glaciers cover the massif; Hindiktig-Khol Lake lies at the eastern foot. Assaults are recorded from 1946, yet locals treat the peak as sacred and traditionally restrict climbs. Several alpine routes of varying grade exist today — an expedition goal, not a weekend hike. Since 2000 a Ubsunur Hollow biosphere reserve cluster (~15,890 ha) protects alpine meadows and argali and snow leopard habitat. Sarlyky domestic yaks graze on foothill pastures. Acclimatise at Hindiktig-Khol, check weather and avalanche conditions. Respect local taboos around the summit and ask before photographing herders.

Mongun-Tayginsky kozhuun; base at Kyzyl-Khaya and Hindiktig-Khol. High routes for experienced teams only.
