Mstyora (lacquer miniature centre)
Mstyora is an urban-type settlement in Vyazniki District on the Klyazma, 14 km from Mstyora railway station. The Mstyora lacquer school formed here — one of the famous four (with Palekh, Kholuy and Fedoskino). The craft grew from icon painting after masters turned to papier-mâché boxes post-revolution. The settlement has a lacquer museum, workshops and shops with authentic work (distinguish from mass souvenirs). Streets are compact; surroundings are typical Vladimir scenery — river, bridge, low houses. Mstyora suits a stop between Vyazniki and Kovrov or a half-day from Vladimir (~120 km). Winter weekdays are quiet; season may bring groups. When buying, ask for artist certification and compare painting: Mstyora is known for smooth landscapes, gold grounds and genre scenes — not “Chinese” copies on the shelf.
