A legend-town on the Volga where a mouse woke a sleeping prince and saved him from a snake: eight museums including the world's only Mouse Museum, drawing up to 140,000 tourists a year.
Myshkin
Myshkin has been a town since 1777, on the high left bank of the Volga opposite the Yukhot mouth. The legend of the name: a prince fell asleep on the bank, and a mouse ran across his face, waking him — and saving him from an approaching snake. The town's symbol is the mouse, depicted on the 1777 coat of arms. Since the mid-1990s Myshkin has become a tourist phenomenon: up to 140,000 guests a year. The Myshkin People's Museum unites eight museums, including the world's only Mouse Museum; there are also the Palace of the Mouse ('Myshkiny Palaty'), a Flax Museum, a Valenki Museum and the Kurov centre. On the streets stand the Dormition Cathedral of 1805–1820 by Giovanni Manfrini and the St Nicholas Cathedral. Across the Volga is a ferry (~10 minutes); on the right bank runs the R104 road Uglich–Myshkin–Rybinsk. The town fits perfectly into a left-bank Volga route with Tutayev and Rybinsk.
How to get there
From Rybinsk buses 159/536, from Yaroslavl-Glavny 512; on the right bank towards Uglich/Rybinsk, then the ferry to the left bank for Myshkin.
