Nerchinsk

Nerchinsk was founded in the 17th century as a Russian eastern outpost and long remained a mining and border-trade centre. Stone houses, fortress works and churches survive — rare Siberian masonry from the 18th–19th centuries. The town sits in the Nercha valley among hills; merchant classicism meets local Siberian stone. Walk the old core slowly — street and courtyard scale only reads on foot. Museum and old-town walks cover mines, merchant houses and border history. Many buildings are private homes — a living city, not an open-air museum. A natural stop on Chita–Shilka–China border routes. Half a day or overnight breaks long steppe drives. River mosquitoes in summer; frost and wind in winter. Modest shoes and water suffice — no mountain trek, but respect private property.
