Khoper Biosphere Reserve

Khoper State Nature Biosphere Reserve (Novokhopyorsk) lies in Novokhopyorsky and Paninsky districts on the Khoper's left bank. Established 1935; UNESCO biosphere network since 1978. Over 16,000 ha preserve typical southeast oblast steppe, floodplain meadows, woodland patches and wetlands. Steppe eagles, bustards, saiga under reintroduction programmes, roe deer and rare steppe plants occur. Access is regulated: eco-trails, arranged tours, plant-picking and random vehicle entry banned. A research reserve, not a picnic park. Tour routes introduce steppe landscape, Khoper floodplain and species conservation. Best in spring when steppe flowers and early autumn when heat is lower. Novokhopyorsk district centre stands at the reserve's southern edge; start for the visitor centre. About 250 km from Voronezh — plan overnight or a long day. Combine with Pavlovsk (~70 km) or Kalach fortress (~80 km) — southeast steppe and river valley route.

How to get there

Novokhopyorsky District, reserve visitor centre; ~15–20 km from Novokhopyorsk by arranged route.

Best season

April–May and September; summer is hot with little shade
