Fortress Rampart (Novosil)

Novosil is one of Oryol Oblast's oldest towns, in 14th-century chronicles. The fortress stood on a high right Oka bank; rampart and ditch fragments survive on the hillfort. A appanage centre, then part of Muscovy; the Oka position controlled crossings. Today Novosil is a small single-storey town. The rampart is an open monument without a single museum hub; the summit walk views the river and opposite bank. Several 19th-century stone churches remain. Novosil rarely appears on mass routes — quiet history without crowds. ~100 km from Oryol. Combine with Verkhovye (Oka source area) and Kolpna — all on the Oka. Steep bank — do not approach unguarded cliffs. Few cafés in town.
