Chalk Hills (Oboyan)

Oboyan is an old town in south Kursk Oblast; nearby chalk beds surface as white hills and ravines. Locals have long called them “chalk mountains”. Soft chalk was shaped by water and wind; slopes change quickly, so the view shifts each season. Steppe and meadow cover summits; sparse shrubs on slopes. A popular photo and short-walk spot but not a landscaped park: steep descents, scree, no fences. Extra caution for children and limited mobility. Oboyan is a natural stop en route to Krasnikovo mill and Korennaya Pustyn — all three fit a day trip from Kursk. Oboyan chalk hills are popular but unmanaged: steep scree, no fences, watch children. White dust is inevitable; after the visit Krasnikovo mill (~10 km) closes a southern loop.
