Mountain system between the Kolyma and the Okhotsk Sea — backbone of multi-day taiga and alpine routes in the oblast.
Okhotsk Range
The Okhotsk Range runs southwest–northeast, separating the Kolyma basin from short rivers to the Okhotsk Sea. Not a single viewpoint but a long mountain system with varied slopes and passes. North slopes hold caldera lakes, cedar taiga and rocky passes; south slopes are gentler with river valleys. Routes link Jack London, Silakh, Kalandr lakes and river descents. Treks need northern tourism experience, satellite comms and fuel support from villages. Map and compass backup to GPS — trails are often absent, terrain and rivers are the guides. Weather shifts in hours — fog, summer snow and ridge wind are normal. Build buffer days and share routes with local guides and rescue services. Valued for linking lakes, passes and taiga in one multi-day route. Expedition format, not a roadside walk — pack food, tent and thermos for each day.
