Upper and middle Onon — steppe river with historical context and fishing camps.
Onon River Valley
The Onon flows through steppe and forest-steppe Trans-Baikal to the Argun. Wide valley with flood meadows and sparse groves — typical eastern krai scenery. Linked to nomadic history and border events; today fishing, cattle and sparse villages along dirt roads. Some banks reachable on dirt tracks; rain makes access harder. Cold water; grayling and lenok typical local catch. Combine valley drive with Nerchinsk and Shilka — an eastern Trans-Baikal river loop over several days. Avoid floodplain camping if storms forecast; respect cattle on meadows. Arrange fishing permits ahead; water in the car essential.
How to get there
