Opochka Earth Fortress

Opochka stands on a hill in the oblast's south. Earth ramparts and ditches from the 14th–15th centuries guarded the Pskov–Novgorod route. Banks remain, partly restored sections and field views survive. A small town — wooden and brick houses, market, bus station. The fort is not isolated from housing — roads cross the ramparts, schools and shops nearby. Living urban landscape, not a glass-case museum. Monuments, alleys and walks on fortress ground. Local festivals in summer; sledding on ramparts in winter. Modest historical display, but relief reads clearly from high points. A stop between Pskov, Novgorod and Velikiye Luki. Allow 1–2 hours for ramparts and town centre. Linked to north-west trade and military history; today quiet country without excursion buses from the oblast capital.
