Otrada-Semyonovskoye Estate

On the Lopasnya in Semenovskoye, Stupino district, stands one of the largest surviving Orlov country complexes. Lands in Khatun volost were granted to A. G. Orlov in 1773; he passed part to his younger brother V. G. Orlov, who in the 1770s, after resigning as director of the Academy of Sciences, settled in Semenovskoye and named the seat Otrada. House and landscape park were conceived in the spirit of an English country place; the architect’s name is debated (Blank or Bazhenov; serf masters led works) — there is no undisputed signature. The ensemble grew for decades: main house with wings, service buildings, greenhouses, St Nicholas church and a mausoleum. For completeness of surviving fabric Otrada is often called a rare “full” complex — yet many volumes are in poor condition; the site has appeared on international endangered-heritage lists. Critical for travel: the main estate grounds lie within a departmental sanatorium zone; free tourist access to the palace and yards is restricted by security. Independent visitors can usually see St Nicholas church; the rest only by arrangement. Do not plan a “museum park stroll” without permission.
