Petrovskoye Turgenev Estate

Petrovskoye estate in Spassky District was the Turgenev family seat where the future writer spent childhood and youth with his mother and grandmother. Impressions here shaped Sketches from a Hunter's Album and other works on Russian village life and hunting grounds. The complex included a main house, wings, park, service buildings and a church. Some structures survive or were restored; a museum-reserve covers the writer's life and 19th-century gentry estate life. Petrovskoye is a landscape route as well as literary: park alleys, ponds, meadows and woodland edges recall Turgenev's prose. Spring and autumn contrast steppe beyond the fence with park shade.
