Pinega River Valley

The Pinega flows northeast through limestone plateaus and pine forest in Arkhangelsk Oblast. Karst landforms, caves and white cliffs on river bends set it apart from the Northern Dvina delta and coast. Shore settlements — Pinega, Krasnoborsk, Yemetsk and hamlets — link by seasonal roads and river transport. Motor boats run in summer; winter ice and winter roads reach remote reaches. The valley was a timber and log-driving hub — old landings, log buildings and raft traces remain on banks. Today forestry, fishing and cave tourism support the economy. Routes follow the river by car with viewpoint and wooden-church stops, or by boat with a local guide. Last kilometres to some caves are dirt tracks, rain-sensitive.
