Pokrovskoye-Rubtsovo Estate

In Pionersky, Istra district, on the Malaya Istra, an estate survives that is known for Nashchokin, Golokhvastov and Morozov owners. The stone Pokrov (Intercession) church (mid-eighteenth century, about 1745, later rebuilt) is a rare Baroque accent for the Moscow region; residential and service buildings stand opposite. Among literary owners, sources name D. P. Golokhvastov. The estate shone at the turn of the nineteenth–twentieth centuries under Zinaida and Savva Morozov: they renewed the farm and stables and hosted receptions. F. O. Shekhtel was engaged for the main house and interiors (Morozov neoclassical/Art Nouveau circle); Chekhov-circle local histories note visits by A. P. Chekhov with O. L. Knipper and artists. In spring 1904 Z. G. Morozova invited Chekhov to a cottage moved to the Istra bank for him — the writer died in June that year without taking up the invitation. In Soviet times a Chekhov rest home used the site; today building access depends on grounds rules (sanatorium/restrictions). The church and exterior silhouette are often what you can see without special permission — confirm on site.
