Porkhov Stone Fortress

Porkhov Fortress stands on the Shelon's right bank in the small town of Porkhov. Built in the 14th century from local limestone; walls with towers, inner courtyard and building remains survive. Not on an isolated hill but within the town — houses and streets around it. River, bridge and lower town views from the towers. Museum displays on fortress and regional history. Summer concerts and fairs on site; winter hours follow the museum schedule. Porkhov is a typical district centre with a station, market and wooden houses. The Shelon flows quietly; riverside walks possible. Not a tourist town, but the fortress rewards a stop between Pskov and Novgorod. Linked to the Shelon trade route and medieval wars. Besieged and damaged, rebuilt many times. One of the oblast's best-preserved stone castles. Allow 1–2 hours; combine with Smolin Monastery or the Shelon valley eastward.
