Pugachevsky Mud Volcano
Main Pugachev mud volcano lies in central Sakhalin ~45 km south of Makarov and a few km from the Okhotsk coast — among Russia's largest by eruption volume. The field includes the main dome and smaller North and South cones. Over twenty eruptions were recorded between 1906 and 2006; major ones ~every 70 years, minor every 1–3 years. In quiet periods it acts as a clay diapir with fresh mud circles 50–200 m across. A new eruption of the main cone was recorded in September 2024. Reach via Pugachevo; a geology site off city tours — boots essential, do not enter active mud without briefing.
How to get there
By car from Makarov or regional road to Pugachevo village; then on foot to the mud field on local paths.
