Rurik Gorodishche
Rurik Gorodishche sits on the high right bank of the Polist within Staraya Russa. Remains of an early Rus fortified settlement: ramparts, ditches and outer bailey where archaeologists found pottery, tools and craft workshops from the 9th–12th centuries. Linked to local toponyms and early settlement legends; studied as part of defensive and trade points in the Polist and Ilmen basin. Today an open archaeological landscape without faux-historic rebuilds. Views over the river, bridge and lower town. About an hour on site; info boards cover digs and chronology. History read in the terrain, not an indoor museum. Visit the same day as mineral springs and Staraya Russa centre — a short stop for archaeology beyond the spa quarter.
