Ruskeala Marble Canyon
The marble canyon at Ruskeala village is a former quarry where marble for Saint Petersburg was mined from the 18th century. After extraction stopped, groundwater flooded the pit; today it is a chain of lakes with vertical marble walls. Water is clear with a turquoise tint; depth exceeds 50 m in places. Perimeter trails, guided tours, summer boat rides and underground gallery visits operate. Ruskeala is part of Ruskeala Mountain Park with a mining museum and routes to other old adits. Popular yet still a geological and industrial monument, not a city park. Visit on weekdays or early morning to avoid peak crowds; allow time for the Ruskeala Underground route if tickets are available.
