Don Pine Woods near Semiluki

Don pine woods are sandy-terrace pine forests on the Don's left bank near Semiluki. Among the largest woodlands by the oblast centre; locals call them simply "dony" or "the pine woods". Used for walks, mushroom and berry picking, winter ski tracks. Sandy soil, moss and lichen under pines; cooler than open steppe in summer; cross-country skiing when snow allows. Some areas adjoin Voronezh Reservoir recreation zones; route as forest — water — return via Semiluki. Not a ticketed reserve but public forest with forestry rules and seasonal fire bans. Access from Semiluki and Don-side settlements; popular trail parking fills on weekends. Arrive early or on weekdays. Semiluki is an 18th-century town with the reservoir dam a few kilometres from the woods. Combine a forest walk with dam and embankment. Spring and post-rain forest roads are muddy; autumn is hunting season — heed signs and stay on known trails.
