The capital of Golden Khokhloma: a town since 1779 where spoons and vases are painted, factory workshops live on and a craft museum holds record-breaking spoons.

Semyonov

Semyonov has been a town since 1779 in the northern Zavolzhye, with the official status of 'capital of Golden Khokhloma'. The craft grew out of a forest land: local masters transferred Zavolzhye herbs and berries onto wood, and Khokhloma painting — gold without gold (through oil and an oven) — became Russia's signature. The town hosts the 'Khokhloma Painting' factory with a museum: it holds a record giant spoon and shows the full cycle — from a lathe blank to the oven 'tempering' of the gold. Master classes let you paint your own spoon, matryoshka or vase and take home Khokhloma made by your hands. The town is modest in architecture but honest in essence: a living craft, not a showcase under glass. A walk between the workshops, the factory shop and the museum takes half a day — and fits neatly into a route to Svetloyar and the Kerzhenets.

How to get there

From Nizhny Novgorod northwards about seventy kilometres; the town lies on the way to Svetloyar and the Kerzhensky reserve.

Best season

All year round; master classes on weekdays, factory tours by appointment.

Travel tips & stories

  • Book master classes ahead: groups take the morning slots.

  • The factory shop is cheaper than souvenir stands: same paints, fairer prices.

  • Ask about the record giant spoon: it is kept in the factory museum.
