Shavlinskiye Lakes

Shavlinskiye Lakes lie in the Shavla river basin on the north slope of the Shavlinsky range. The lower lake is more accessible; the upper lies higher in taiga near snowy peaks — both framed by larch, cedar, and rocky slopes. The route takes several days with fords, steep climbs, and no signal. Popular with travellers seeking real taiga without asphalt or noisy tract-side bases. Lake water is cold and clear; shores can be boggy. Fishing is possible under local rules; nights are in tents at equipped or agreed camps. The Shavlinsky range rises from the upper lake as a wall of snowy peaks — familiar from photo books, but earned only on foot. After rain trails erode and streams swell. Include the lakes in north Altai link-ups if you have time, a guide, and a week's food. Not a day trip.
