A monastery in the Shcheglovskaya zasека forest near Tula, the only one in the oblast: founded in the 1860s with the participation of the future emperor, standing in woods on a high bank.
Shcheglovsky Monastery
The Bogorodichny Panteleimon Shcheglovsky Monastery is a men's monastery of the Tula diocese in the Shcheglovskaya zaseka on Tula's northern outskirts — the only monastery in the oblast. It was founded in the 1860s, its establishment tied to the participation of Tsarevich Nikolai Alexandrovich — the future Emperor Nicholas II — who attended the laying. The monastery stands in woods on a high bank — the zaseka, once a defensive belt of Moscow, now frames the cloister. The main church honours the 'Quick to Hear' icon of the Mother of God with a Panteleimon side altar. The monastery is active today; the easiest approach is from Tula by city transport with a change towards the settlement, and trails through the zaseka lead to the cloister from several sides.
How to get there
Tula's northern edge: city transport towards the Obidimo settlement and the zaseka, then on foot; or by car along the Obidimo road.
Best season
Year-round; the forest is lovely in winter too.
