Shelon River Valley

The Shelon runs through Porkhov and other northern districts. A forest river with gentle flow, sand bars and sparse bank villages. Spring levels rise after snowmelt; summer warms in shallows. Linked to the Pskov–Novgorod trade route — fortresses including Porkhov stood along it. Today mainly an anglers' route and a corridor between towns on parallel roads. Boggy banks; midges and ticks in woods. Quiet, pine scent and stops at village bridges without tourist crowds. View the Shelon valley from Porkhov — embankment walk and drives toward villages. Rare organised rafting; local fishing and contemplative drives instead. Beautiful banks in autumn; frozen in winter but uneven ice — locals only without guidance.
