Shilka River Gorge

The Shilka is a major Trans-Baikal river; upper reaches have cliffy banks, rock outcrops and narrow riffles. Steppe gradually gives way to first larches on northern slopes. Anglers camp on riffles; cold fast water on rapids. Road partly follows the river; rain may trigger slope slips — check road condition before driving. Steppe hills, cliffs and green flood meadows. Not a marked-trail reserve gorge but a working river zone with fishing camps and sparse villages. Fits Nerchinsk–Shilka–Chita itineraries. A day or two for fishing and shore walks; multi-day camping with supplies is possible. Bears use the floodplain — store food in tight containers and leave no litter. Arrange fishing permits before travel.
