A merchant house in Yelabuga where the childhood and youth of the 'tsar of forests' Ivan Shishkin passed: memorial rooms, a studio and the view of the Shishkin ponds from the veranda.
Ivan Shishkin House-Museum
Ivan Shishkin was born in Yelabuga in 1832 into the family of Ivan Vasilyevich Shishkin, a second-guild merchant — an active man who restored the tower of the Devil's site and built the town's waterworks. The house on Vysokaya street has kept the nineteenth-century merchant life in which the future author of 'Morning in a Pine Forest' grew up. The memorial museum opened in 1960 and is part of the Yelabuga state museum reserve. The rooms hold a recreated interior, family relics, drawings of the young Vanya and studio objects; the tour is rounded out by exhibitions of painting and graphics by artists of the Shishkin line. The best finale is the veranda: from it opens the view of the Shishkin ponds, laid out by the artist's father. Around the house is a green block with oaks the painter remembered from childhood; from here, from the Yelabuga woods, came that very pine forest now hanging in the Tretyakov Gallery.
How to get there
Centre of Yelabuga, Vysokaya street; ten minutes on foot from the Devil's site through the Alexander garden.
Best season
All year round; in summer the veranda and ponds are green, in winter the museum is quiet and crowd-free.
Travel tips & stories
The ticket is shared with the Yelabuga museum reserve: one visit covers the site, the house and the Durasov estate.
Ask the wardens about 'Morning in a Pine Forest': here they know the story of Savitsky's bear cubs.
After the house, walk to the ponds: the veranda angle is the very one the artist loved.
