Shantar Islands

Seals and seabirds use the shores; the landscape mixes cliffs, forest patches and empty beaches without infrastructure. Not a resort or day trip but an expedition goal for the krai's maritime side. Routes usually start from Nikolayevsk-on-Amur by sea with an experienced captain and weather time buffer. Independent trips without local knowledge and a reliable vessel are not recommended. Travellers value the Shantars for remoteness and clean shores — tent, warm waterproof clothing, satellite comms and readiness for storm delays are essential kit.
