Smolensk Lakeland National Park

Smolensk Lakeland National Park covers the oblast's north between Demidov, Dukhovshchina and the Belarus border. The name reflects dozens of glacial lakes among conifer and mixed forest. Created to protect forest and aquatic ecosystems; rare birds nest here, moose and beavers live in the woods. Visitors get eco-trails, regulated fishing, summer campsites and winter ski routes. Modest infrastructure: no large hotels inside the park; bases in edge settlements. Deliberately 'forest' format — quiet, permitted campfires and pine reflections in water, not a resort strip. Car recommended: sparse public transport and long distances between lakes. One day — one sector; a full route needs two–three days with guesthouse stays. Combine with Demidov or the Belarus border — a route away from Smolensk kremlin into northern backcountry. Ticks and mosquitoes — repellent essential. Fires only where allowed; no litter on shores.
