Smolin Monastery

Smolin Monastery stands in Palkino District a few kilometres from Smolin village. Founded in the 14th century; closed in Soviet times, partly ruined. Fragments of walls, towers and church buildings remain. Forest and fields surround it; access by paved and dirt road. Not a busy tourist site — few visitors, modest signs. For seekers of forgotten north-west cloisters — stone masonry, forest and rural scenery. Slow restoration; some ground may be fenced. Combine with Palkino or roads between Pskov and the border. Allow 1–2 hours for viewing and surroundings. Many midges in summer; monastery road may be unploughed in winter — seasonal car and warm clothing.
