Snow Volcano

Snow Volcano is a local name for a mud-volcano formation on a peninsula east of Gertner Bay. Gas and cold mud build cones and crater-like depressions — activity without lava or heat. Geologists and unusual-landscape seekers come for rocky tundra, sea and constant wind. No trails or signs — navigate by map and local guide. Reach by ATV or boat on an agreed route; long trail-less walk otherwise. Sea access depends on calm weather — book boats ahead and allow a spare day. Slippery mud; gas may pool in hollows — stay back from active vents and do not step on thin crust over mud outlets. Boots you can ruin are essential. Often paired with an Okhotsk coast boat trip. A few hours' stop, not a camp base — pitch tents at agreed sites away from active outlets.
