Starodub Kremlin Hill

Starodub is among the oldest towns of Chernigov-Severia; the first mention ties to the 1096 siege when Vladimir Monomakh invested the city for 33 days. The citadel lies on Soldier's Hill — a triangular cape on the left steep bank of the Babinets. The citadel covers about 1.5 ha; a fortified outer town and open posad adjoined it, including on the right bank. Total ancient Starodub reached 25 ha — a major centre for its era. Archaeologists found Yukhnov, Romny and Old Russian layers; cultural deposit on Soldier's Hill reaches 4.6 m. The town arose on an earlier hillfort and grew from a princely estate. Rampart remnants about ten metres wide survive on the landward side; the platform rises 15–17 m above the river. Not a rebuilt fortress but an archaeological landscape within the modern town. Combine Soldier's Hill with historic Starodub and the Belarus border (~11 km) for early Old Rus history.
