A town on the old Smolensk road — mineral springs, spa tradition and a quiet provincial centre.
Sukhinichi Mineral Springs
Sukhinichi stands on the Bolva River 80 km from Kaluga on the old Smolensk road; known for mineral springs used therapeutically since the 19th century. Spa tradition shaped part of the building and infrastructure. Springs and drinking galleries are main route stops; water varies in composition, tasting possible in season under institution rules. Not a major resort — a provincial centre with medical history. Compact historic centre: stone houses, a church and quiet lanes. Stop between Kaluga and Bryansk or en route to Maloyaroslavets. Allow two to three hours for springs, centre and walk. Modest cafés, guesthouses and sanatorium buildings with limited admission. Mineral water is not a substitute for treatment — follow medical advice and institution rules. Do not take water from unguarded intakes. Some galleries have shorter winter hours — check before visiting.
