The lake beneath which legend places the sunken city of Kitezh: crystal water thirty-three metres deep, a crescent of hills around and a federal natural monument.

Svetloyar Lake

Svetloyar lies in the Zavolzhye lands north-east of Nizhny Novgorod, between the Kerzhenets and Vetluga rivers, by the village of Vladimirskoye. The lake's oval stretches 470 by 350 metres, and its depth reaches 33.5 metres — an order deeper than neighbouring lakes: the southern bottom falls in a funnel below steep banks. Legend holds that the city of Kitezh stands beneath the water, sunk by prayer before Batu's invasion, its domes visible through the water to the righteous. Science sees it plainly: a karst lake fed by bottom springs, hydrocarbonate-calcium water, transparency of over five metres — and the status of a federal natural monument; since 2015 the 'Svetloyar Lake and Vladimirskoye village' complex is also listed as cultural heritage. The lake is cold and quiet: people come not to swim but to stand above the water. Dawn at Svetloyar, when mist lies knee-deep and the crescent of hills closes over the water, is the very light that keeps the legend alive.

How to get there

From Nizhny Novgorod, about 130 kilometres north-east via Semyonov and Voskresenskoye; the lake lies a kilometre and a half west of the village of Vladimirskoye.

Best season

May to September; quiet weekday dawns are the best hours by the water.
