Low range in the west — steppe and forest-steppe panoramas near the Buryatia border.

Tarbagatai Range

Tarbagatai Range separates steppe from forest-steppe slopes. Local roads cross passes — without them the ridge is just a distant horizon line. Ridge views over river valleys and distant hills; yellow grass in summer, green in spring. Road trip with photo stops and short crest walks. Fewer large wildlife than taiga; snakes and ground squirrels present — watch your step on rocky sections. Strong ridge wind even on sunny days. Muddy slippery dirt roads after rain; offline map and car water essential. Stay on road — steppe farms are sensitive to trespass. Combine with Krasny Chikoy and Kuka volcanoes — the west's panorama and geology loop, not a services trip.

How to get there

From Chita and Krasny Chikoy on regional roads to passes; some sections unpaved.

Best season

June–September in dry weather
