Tarusa Artists' Colony

Tarusa stands on a steep right Oka bank 130 km from Moscow; since the 13th century a trading and craft point, in the 20th a dacha hub for writers and artists. Marina Tsvetaeva, Konstantin Paustovsky, Nikolay Zabolotsky and Georgy Ivanov lived or visited here. The Tsvetaeva family museum and Tarusa Crystals and Porcelain museum are main stops; but Tarusa is really a walk along wooden lanes, down to the river and cliff views over the floodplain. Compact enough for a half-day on foot. The embankment and Paustovsky memorial park recall literary dachas; boat landings work in summer, winter Oka ice draws photographers. Tarusa is a cultural counterpoint in the Golden Ring of Ugra to Nikola-Lenivets and reserve forests. Modest dining — cafés and guesthouses exist, but book weekends ahead. From Kaluga to Tarusa is about two hours by car via Kozelsk or Serpukhov. The crystal museum shows local glass and 19th–20th-century porcelain — the town's craft fame. Small display but it rounds off the literary route. Not a beach resort: steep descent, stony bank. Respect private dachas and fenced river-view plots.
